Johnny Cash, “Bootleg Vol. III.” The latest installment of this from-the-vaults series is a gem, compiling live performances by Cash and his band from 1956, from when “I Walk The Line” was a new single, to 1979, when Johnny was becoming a Nashville afterthought but was still great.
Across the two-CD set, you can hear Cash grow as a performer and feel his connection with varying audiences. The songs are all there, and Cash and the Tennessee Three and his later bands give universally strong strong performances. That makes this one a keeper. Grade: A
