It was moments before the start of what is hoped to be the first annual Johnny Cash Music Festival, Thursday night at the sold-out Arkansas State University’s (ASU) Convocation Center on the Jonesboro campus. For the first time since arriving from her New York home for rehearsals two days earlier, Rosanne Cash was nervous.
“It’s an honor I almost can’t take in,” she said. “My dad’s boyhood home is being turned into a historic site! That’s huge—a big deal for all of us. And everyone’s given their time: Kris [Kristofferson], George [Jones]. I’m really humbled.”
Taped for future airing on PBS, the four-hour concert brought together four generations of Cash family members—including her brother and co-host John Carter Cash, uncle Tommy Cash, aunt Joanne Cash Yates, daughter Chelsea Crowell and sister-in-law Laura Cash—along with other performers also including Bill Miller, Dailey & Vincent, Gary Morris and Rodney Crowell.
