From the liner notes:
Whether singing folk ballads, his own songs or traditional hymns, Johnny Cash has proved himself time and again one of today’s most versatile and popular artists. In Hymns From the Heart, his newest album, Johnny once more lends his talents to the simple, eloquent songs of faith and devotion.
Johnny sings this inspiring collection reverently and fervently, investing all the songs with deeply felt emotion. Among the hymns he has chosen for his album are the moving He’ll Understand and Say Well Done, If We Never Meet Again and My God Is Real. I Got Shoes and Let the Lower Lights Be Burning are sung in Johnny’s own new arrangements.
Born in Dyess, Arkansas, Johnny grew up in a cheerful small-town atmosphere, and developed an early fondness for country music without ever dreaming that he would one day become a leading singing personality. He simply liked to sing, as a soloist and along with his friends. When he had completed his stint in the Air Force, he went to radio and television school hoping to become an announcer. While there, he found himself growing more and more interested in music, and particularly in writing songs. He began to jot down ideas for verses and tunes, becoming increasingly more serious and expert about his “pastime.” One day he gathered together a few completed songs and took them to record companies. His potential was recognized at once, and indeed his first four songs were all huge successes. Since then, he has appeared as a member of the Grand Ole Op’ry cast, and worked with other important stars such as Marty Robbins, Carl Perkins and Ray Price. When he is not traveling, Johnny lives in Hollywood with his charming wife and their three young daughters.
Gifted with a voice particularly well suited to sacred songs, Johnny also brings to them his special kind of understanding. Here are some of his very finest performances. You will return to them often for inspiration and delight.
