Tracklist
From the liner notes:
Johnny Cash’s tales of love in HAPPINESS IS YOU form a capsule history of emotional relationships between men and women. Of course, there will always be lovers and there will always be losers, and this time Johnny turns his hand to a program of songs that deal with both. Listeners to his laments, however, are the winners because Johnny makes listening magic out of even the unhappy love songs.
In Happiness Is You, Johnny discusses his romantic future, and in the easy come, easy go (That’s What You Get) For Lovin’ Me, Johnny gets back at all the girls who have loved and run and left him with shadows for companions. A brassy comment on life and love, it’s a good bit of delightful listening. Johnny has also included some extras. One of them is the great standard Wabash Cannon Ball, which will prove to one and all (if it ever needs any proving!) that Cash still has the Nashville thing all wrapped up.
The entire album makes for delightful listening mainly because this is Johnny Cash, a giant in the field, doing the thing he knows and does best. Here is the Johnny Cash we’ve come to know through such hits as “I Walk the Line,” “Understand Your Man,” “Cry, Cry, Cry,” “Ring of Fire,” and all the others. This is the Johnny Cash who has been nominated to that highly exclusive company of musical kings, The Country and Western Hall of Fame.
